When I install Box Sync for the first time and sign in, it connects to the cloud and displays my files in the Finder, as it should. ![]() You can find a list of the Finder Extensions installed on your Mac in System Preferences > Extensions.Ī common problem for administrators like me, however, is that these extensions may not always play nice when trying to automate a task. For example, the institution I work at utilizes Box Sync for file syncing. These extensions provide all sorts of additional functionality, from displaying badge icons to reflecting a file or folder’s sync status, adding a contextual menu, etc. macOS provides the developers of these applications with the ability to utilize a Finder Extension, or as Apple calls them in their dev note, Finder Sync Extensions. Typically, these applications sync files from a cloud server down to the local machine and vice-versa. There are a number of applications for macOS that utilize a Finder Extension. There is no impact on existing files uploaded to OneDrive and SharePoint.I stumbled upon this about a month ago as I was trying to automate something, so this may be relevant information to some. If you enable this setting, the sync app will not upload new files that match the rules you specified. Users will also see a message in the OneDrive activity center that explains why the files aren’t syncing. If you are currently using the admin center setting to block certain file types from being uploaded from the OneDrive sync app, you will need to first enable this new setting, make sure it’s applied by restarting the OneDrive sync app, and then disable that current setting in admin center. In Finder, the files appear with an “Excluded from sync” icon. No errors appear for the skipped files, and the files remain in the local OneDrive folder. ![]() If you enable this setting, the sync app doesn’t upload new files that match the keywords you specified. You can enter complete names, such as “setup.exe” or use the asterisk (*) as a wildcard character to represent a series of characters, such as *.pst. This setting lets you enter keywords to prevent the OneDrive sync app from uploading certain files to OneDrive or SharePoint. ![]() We will begin rolling this out in late April and expect to complete rollout mid-May. This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 80684. This will rollout to the OneDrive sync app on macOS. This new feature setting will allow you to exclude newly added OneDrive files from syncing to the cloud by file name or extension on macOS devices. ![]()
